Nakshatras

by Kerry Shamblin

This is the division of the zodiac into 27 different signs, each of which covers 13°20" of the full 360° About two and one half Nakshatras, therefore, will occupy the space of one of the regular signs. It is known as the lunar zodiac, whereas the zodiac described above is more evocative of the Sun's journey throughout a year. The moon travels through one Nakshatra per day, and the Nakshatra that the moon occupies during the day on which an individual was born establishes the beginning of their cycle of planetary periods. Each of these lunar divisions is ruled by one of the planets, including Rahu and Ketu, and their meanings are useful for fine-tuning an astrology reading.

Nakshatra Descriptions

* The first paragraph for each nakshatra is taken from Dr. David Frawley's article entitled Shaktis of the Nakshatras. They are translations from an ancient Vedic text called Taittiriya Brahmana I.5.1.

1. Ashwini

0 00' - 13 20' Aries
Planetary Ruler: Ketu
Deities: Ashwin Kumars, Sun, Shiva
Symbol: Horse's head
Animal: Male horse
Nature: Deva (god-like)
Motivation: Dharma (action)

Ashwini is governed by the Ashwins, the twin horsemen. It has the power to quickly reach things (shidhra vyapani shakti). Its basis above are the creatures to be healed. Its basis below is the healing therapies. From these three the entire world becomes free of disease.

The first nakshatra, Ashwini, lies entirely within the beginning portion of the first sign, Aries, which is the cardinal fire sign of Mars. Ashwini has Ketu as its planetary ruler and is associated with the deities Surya (Sun), Shiva and the Ashwin Kumars. The Ashwin Kumars are twin horseman that bring the power of healing. This is a very energetic and dynamic nakshatra with themes of power and the harnessing of it.

Ketu as planetary ruler of this nakshatra bestows inner focus, spiritual aspiration and detachment from worldly desire. Mars bestows its positive, outward aspect in the domain of Aries which represents the head of the cosmic person, Purusha. All parts of the head, therefore, are brought into play as expressions of Aries: the brain, the eyes, the ears, the nose, all that which collects and processes information.

The symbol of the twin horsemen evokes the harnessing of power, the main signification of the planet Mars. Horses are creatures of immense power, ability and intelligence and are symbolic of the boundless energy of the universe that we embody as human beings. The twin horsemen show our ability to control and harness this energy, which is largely the work of Ketu, a practitioner of inner focus and self control.

The concept of healing that is evoked through this nakshatra can be viewed literally or in a broader sense. The need for healing implies that illness exists. If we broaden the concept of health toward the concept of wholeness, we can see further implications and uses for the energy of Ashwini. The idea is that "healing" really implies bringing focus and order to situations of chaos, imbalance and disintegration, whether this is a condition in the body such as disease or injury, a condition in the mind such as depression or distraction or a condition in the community such as selfish, isolating behavior that harms the wellness of the collective.

People and situations under the influence of Ashwini can tend toward the following:
